60,000 Pushups in my 60th Year

On August 11 of 2016 I began my 60th year of life. What better way to celebrate life and health than by doing another 60,000 pushups in my 60th year? I did it 5 years ago, so I am doing it again. In the months immediately following January 1, 2013 (after completing 60,000 pushups in 2012) I didn't do nearly as many pushups as I had been doing in 2012. I figured I needed a break (at least, I WANTED a break) and I had nothing to prove, so my pushups fell WAY off. and by WAY off, I mean I probably only did 50 pushups, maybe once a week for a year or so. I worked pretty hard to accomplish 60,000 in 2012 and decided I didn't want to stop completely and lose everything I had gained. So, I started doing a few sets now and then, just to keep my hand in. I also continued working out at my office, doing boot camp 2-3 days a week and doing my own thing another 1-2 days.

After a while, I wondered if I could still do 50 with my feet on the 3rd step of the stairs, without stopping. I could not. I think I was able to do 30-ish. Hmmm, I thought to myself. This is not acceptable. It took me probably 6 months to get back to where I could do 50 from the third step again. So, I began to do more pushups again, but without a specific goal, just doing more. It was probably early in 2016 that I began to think about doing 60,000 in my 60th year of life. I considered it for several months, slowly ramping up my daily pushups (just in case I decided to get serious), but was just playing with the idea - not making the commitment to myself. It wasn't until probably July that I began to consider doing this in earnest.

So, on my birthday, Thursday August 11, 2016, I did 200 pushups. The first set was with my feet on the 3rd step, like the good old days. Then I did 100 bicycles and then 20 toe touches while lying on my back with my feet straight up in the air. A few minutes later, I did a second set of 50, raising my right foot on 11-20 and my left foot on 31-40, followed by another 100 bicycles and 20 toe touches on my back. Within the next 30 minutes, I did two more sets of 50, followed by bicycles and toe touches.

For the first month or so, I did 100 bicycles and 20 toe touches after each set of 50 pushups, for a total of 400 bicycles and 80 toe touches 5 days a week, with 2 sets on Saturdays. Sometime in September I backed off on doing all that core work, but I still always do 100 bicycles and 20 toe touches at least twice each day. Every now and then I do 400 bicycles and 80 toe touches in the 4 sets. Sometimes I do 200 bicycles in a row just for fun. In the log below I do not keep track of the core exercises, only pushups (but the core work is still there). In this log (My 60th Year), I'm not keeping such a detailed record of all of my exercises, just pushups. I may sometimes write about other exercising, but the pushups are the focus.

60,000 divided by 52 weeks = 1153.85 pushups each week on average.

The general plan is similar to what I did in 2012. My weeks start on Monday. 200 pushups Monday - Friday, 100 on Saturday and 50 on Sunday is 1150/week. That will give me 59,800 pushups over the course of the year. I'll have to get another 200 in over the course of the year.

In the log below, Line 1 is the dates of the week. Line 2 is the number of pushups I did each day, starting on Monday. Line 3 is the running total of completed pushups for the year. Line 4 is the pace I need to meet to reach the goal.

You may notice I started off slowly. When I started keeping track in this log on August 11, 2016 (my 59th birthday), I did not keep track of the pace total (line 4) for each week and I was not paying attention, so I let myself fall behind. In January of 2017 I came back and inserted line 4 for each week as a tool to help me get on track and stay there.

I do not know how the year will play out, whether I'll be able to maintain a pace to finish or fall behind. It will be an adventure!

First time around - Calendar year 2012

I started doing 1000 pushups each week back in July of 2011 and bumped it up to 1100 each week in September. Aside from a couple of weeks in the fall of 2011 when I only did 500, I've maintained my schedule ever since.

Those of you who are following My Pushup Log may have noticed that I started doing a few more pushups in some weeks starting around the end of August. I also tried something different on August 10 by doing 1 minute circuits. I found that I really liked doing these. With the relative ease of getting a bunch of pushups done in a short amount of time using the 1 minute circuit method, I started to wonder how many pushups I could do in 1 minute circuits. So, my weekly totals started climbing occasionally, due entirely to the success of the 1 minute circuits.

8/16, 8/20, 8/23 and 8/30 were days that I really started exploring the 1 minute circuit method in earnest, completing 400 total pushups for the first time on 8/30. I raised the bar a bit on 9/20, 10/2 and 10/11 (today, as I'm writing this) by doing 500 pushups (50 at home and then 30 circuits of 15 pushups and 15 crunches). I don't know how many pushups I can do using this method, but I know I can do more - and I plan to.

On 10/25, I did 550 pushups and crunches in 40 minutes (450 in 30 minutes and 100 in the next 10 minutes). On 12/4, I did 500 pushups and 300 crunches in 25 minutes.
On November 1, I passed the 50,000 mark, so I'm quite a bit ahead of schedule. It occurs to me that Dad died on December 1 of last year, so it would be fitting if I finished the 55,000 on the anniversary of his death, Dec 1. As of Saturday, Nov 3, I completed 50,400. There are 4 full weeks remaining in November. If I do my normal 1100 each week, that would be 50,400 + 4400 for 54,800. So I'll do an extra 100 2 of these weeks so I can finish up 55,000 with the 100 that I will do on Saturday, Dec. 1.

12/31 Monday - New Year's Eve. I had 100 pushups to go today to finish 60,000 for the year, so in the morning I did a set of 50 with my feet on the third step of the stairs (last time - Yea!). Then a set of 40 regular pushups. At about 1 minute before midnight, I started recording a video and did the last 10 pushups with the countdown of the last 10 seconds. Yee Haw! I'm done with my 60,000 pushups in 2012!

12/30 Sunday - rest

12/29 Saturday - 100 straight pushups, building up from 1 to 10 reps and back down, without standing and resting between sets - rather, resting with locked arms in a plank. Weekly total is 800. Running total for the year is 59,900.

12/28 Friday - 2 sets of 50 pushups, totalling 100 for the day.

12/27 Thursday - 1 set of 50 pushups at home with feet on the third step of the stairs. Then 10 1 minute circuits of 20 pushups and 20 knee tucks, totalling 200 of each. Total pushups for the day is 250.

12/26 Wednesday - 3 sets of 50 pushups, with one set raising a foot on 11-20 and 31-40. Total pushups for the day is 150.

12/25 Tuesday - Merry Christmas! 2 sets of 50 regular pushups for 100.

12/24 Monday - 2 sets of 50 regular pushups for 100.

12/23 Sunday - rest

12/22 Saturday - 2 sets of 50 regular pushups at home for a total of 100 for the day. Total pushups for the week is 1100. Running total for the year is 59,100.

12/21 Friday - 2 sets of 50 regular pushups at home for a total of 100 for the day.

12/20 Thursday -  1 set of 50 pushups at home with feet on the third step of the stairs. At the Coliseum, I did 3 sets of 50 pushups, mingled with sets of curls, lat pulldowns, squats, crunches, knee tucks and seated rows.Total pushups for the day is 200.

12/19 Wednesday - 1 set of 50 pushups at home with feet on the third step of the stairs. At the Coliseum, today's theme was "15". I did 15 1 minute circuits of 15 pushups, 15 knee tucks and 15 squats while holding 15 lb, dumbells in each hand (for 225 of each). To fishish up with an even number, I did a final set of 25 pushups in 5's with my hands in various positions. Today's pushup total is 300.

12/18 Tuesday - 1 set of 50 pushups at home with feet on the third step of the stairs. At the Coliseum, I did a set of 50 pushups in 5's alternating placing hands on a 6" ball. Next, I did sets of tricep extensions, a bunch of abs exercises and a 2 minute wall sit. With 100 pushups to go, I did 4 sets of 25 on 1 minute. Finished up with more abs work, ending with 200 bicycles. Today's pushup total is 200.

12/17 Monday - 1 set of 50 pushups at home with feet on the third step of the stairs. At the Coliseum, I did a set of 50 pushups in 5's alternating placing hands on a 6" ball. No boot camp day. Intermingled with sets of general exercises for the legs, abs and shoulders, I did a set of 50 regular pushups. Finished up with a final set of 50 pushups in 10's with hands in various positions. Today's pushup total is 200.

12/16 Sunday - 1 set of 50 regular pushups. Total pushups for the week is 1500. Running total for the year is 58,000.

12/15 Saturday - 1 set of 50 regular pushups.

12/14 Friday - 2 sets of 50 regular pushups.

12/13 Thursday - 1 set of 50 pushups at home with feet on the third step of the stairs. At the Coliseum, I did 15 1 minute circuits of 20 pushups and 20 knee tucks (for 300 of each), followed immediately by 10 more 1 minute circuits of 15 pushups and 15 knee tucks (for 150 of each), resulting in 450 pushups and knee tucks in 25 minutes. Next, I did about 15 minutes on the elliptical machine. Today's pushup total is 500.

12/12 Wednesday - 1 set of 50 pushups at home with feet on the third step of the stairs. Before boot camp at the Coliseum, I did a set of 50 pushups in 5's alternating placing hands on a 6" ball. Boot camp was very much about shoulders, chest and arms. After boot camp, I did 4 sets of 25 pushups on 2 minutes. Today's pushup total is 200.

12/11 Tuesday - 1 set of 50 pushups at home with feet on the third step of the stairs. At the Coliseum, I did 10 1 minute circuits of 20 pushups and 20 crunches (for 200 of each), followed immediately by 10 1 minute circuits of 15 pushups and 15 crunches (for 150 of each), resulting in 350 pushups and crunches in 20 minutes. Next, I did 5 sets of 10 curls with 25 lb dumbells, alternating with sets of 20 tricep extensions at 120 lbs, 10 reverse butterflys with 70 lbs, 10 seated rows at 130 lbs, and 50 side crunches on eich side. So I did curls, tricep extensions, curls, reverse butterflys, curls, seated rows, curls, side crunches and curls. Today's pushup total is 400. I love this!

12/10 Monday - 1 set of 50 pushups at home with feet on the third step of the stairs. Before boot camp at the Coliseum, I did a set of 50 pushups in 5's alternating placing hands on a 6" ball. After boot camp, I did a set of 50 pushups, raising a foot on 11-20 and 31-40, rested a few minutes and then did a last set of 50 pushups in 10's with hands in various positions. Today's pushup total is 200.

12/9 Sunday - 1 set of 100 straight pushups, building up from 1 to 10 reps and back down, without standing and resting between sets - rather, resting with locked arms in a plank. Total for the week is 1500. Running total for the year is 56,500.

12/8 Saturday - Rest.

12/7 Friday - 1 set of 50 pushups at home with feet on the third step of the stairs. Before boot camp at the Coliseum, I did a set of  50 pushups in 5's, alternating hands on a 6" ball. After boot camp, I did a set of 50 pushups, raising a foot on 11-20 and 31-40, rested a few minutes and then did a last set of 50 pushups in 10's with hands in various positions. Today's pushup total is 200.

12/6 Thursday - 1 set of 50 pushups at home with feet on the third step of the stairs. At the Coliseum, I did the old routine of 50 pushups in 5's, alternating hands on a 6" ball, followed by curls, tricep extensions and crunches. Then a set of 50 pushups, raising a foot on 11-20 and 31-40, followed by more core exercises. Then a final set of 50 pushups in 10's with my hands in various positions. Finished up with 50 side crunches on each side. Total pushups for the day is 200.

12/5 Wednesday - Still feeling the effects of the 500 pushups in 25 minutes that I did yesterday. Started my day with the usual set of 50 pushups at home with feet on the third step of the stairs. During boot camp at the Coliseum, I did a set of 25 regular pushups. After boot camp I did another set of 25, giving me 100 for the day so far. To get in the remaining 100, I did 2 sets of 25 pushups on 1 minute. Then did 2 sets of 20 and a set of 10 on 1 minute. I'm tired. Today's pushup total is 200.

12/4 Tuesday - 1 set of 50 pushups at home with feet on the third step of the stairs. At the Coliseum, I started out with the goal of doing 30 1 minute circuits of 20 pushups and 20 crunches (for 600 of each) but didn't quite make it. After 15 minutes, I backed off and dropped the crunches, doing a few more sets of 20 pushups at the top of each minute. Then I couldn't do 20, so I did 15 pushups at the start of the minute and the remaining 5 after 30 seconds. Was able to continue this pace for several minutes, then changed to 10 and 10. Stopped after 25 minutes, resulting in 500 pushups and 300 crunches in 25 minutes (a new personal best)! At this point, I had completed 550 pushups including the 50 at home, so after a few minutes of rest, I alternated 5 more sets of 10 pushups and 10 crunches with a few seconds of rest after the crunches. When I got down for the first set of 10, after walking around and resting for a few minutes, I felt a slight dizziness, not quite like almost passing out, but definitely noticeable. Today's pushup total is 600.

12/3 Monday - 1 set of 50 pushups at home with feet on the third step of the stairs. At the Coliseum, I did a set of 50 pushups in 5's alternating placing hands on a 6" ball. Then did sets of declined situps, forward lunges, curls and hanging leg lifts. Next, did 3rd set of 50 pushups raising a foot on 11-20 and 31-40, followed by more sets of declined situps, reverse lunges, curls and hanging leg lifts. Then finished up with 50 in 10's, with my hands in various positions. Today's pushup total is 200.

12/2 Sunday - Rest.

12/1 Saturday - Today is the 1 year anniversary of my father-in-law's death. I finished up my 55,000 pushup challenge today with 1 set of 100 straight pushups, building up from 1 to 10 reps and back down, without standing and resting between sets - rather, resting with locked arms in a plank. Today's total is 100. Total for the week is 1200. Running total for the year is 55,000. I still have a month left in the year so I will do another 5,000 pushups to make a total of 60,000. Now the pressure is off to complete the 55,000, so I think I'll do some crazy things like see how many I can do in 60 minutes. Stay tuned...

11/30 Friday - 4 sets of 50 pushups at home. Today's pushup total is 200.

11/29 Thursday - 1 set of 50 pushups at home with feet on the third step of the stairs. At the Coliseum, I did 10 1 minute circuits of 15 pushups and 15 crunches (for 150 of each in 10 minutes) and then 10 more 1 minute circuits of 10 pushups, 10 crunches and 10 squats with 10 lb. dumbells in each hand, curling as I complete each squat (for 100 of each in 10 minutes). Then did 20 tricep extensions with 120 lbs. and 100 bicycles. Total pushups for the day: 300.

11/28 Wednseday - 1 set of 50 pushups at home with feet on the third step of the stairs and 1 set of 50 regular pushups. Total pushups for the day is 100.

11/27 Tuesday - 1 set of 50 pushups at home with feet on the third step of the stairs. At the Coliseum, I did 10 2 minute circuits of 15 pushups, crunches, squats while holding 15 lb. dumbells and 15 curls with the 15 lb. dumbells (for 150 of each in 20 minutes). After that I did 20 downward tricep extensions with 120 lbs. Total pushups for the day: 200.

11/26 Monday - 1 set of 50 pushups at home with feet on the third step of the stairs. Before boot camp at the Coliseum, I did a set of 50 regular pushups. During boot camp I squeezed in a set of 25 pushups with my feet on a half ball. After boot camp I did a set of 50 in 5's alternating placing hands on a 6" ball. After a short rest, I finished up with 25 in 5's, with my hands in various positions. Today's pushup total is 200.

11/25 Sunday - Rest.

11/24 Saturday - 1 set of 100 straight pushups, building up from 1 to 10 reps and back down, without standing and resting between sets - rather, resting with locked arms in a plank. Today's total is 100. Total for the week is 1200. Running total for the year is 53,900.

11/23 Friday - 2 sets of 50 pushups at home. Later, I did 5 sets of 20 pushups on 1 minute. Today's pushup total is 200.

11/22 Thursday - Happy Thanksgiving! 4 sets of 50 pushups at home, followed by a wonderful day of celebrating thankfulness with my family. Today's pushup total is 200.

11/21 Wednesday - 1 set of 50 pushups at home with feet on the third step of the stairs. Before boot camp at the Coliseum, I did a set of 50 in 5's alternating placing hands on a 6" ball. After boot camp I did a set or 50 in 10's, raising a foot on 11-20 and 31-40. Finished up with a final set of 50 pushups. Today's pushup total is 200.

11/20 Tuesday - 1 set of 50 pushups at home with feet on the third step of the stairs. At the Coliseum, I did 10 1 minute circuits of 15 pushups and 15 crunches (for 150 of each in 10 minutes) and then 10 more 1 minute circuits of 10 pushups, 10 crunches and 10 squats (for 100 of each in 10 minutes). Total pushups for the day: 300.

11/19 Monday - 1 set of 50 pushups at home with feet on the third step of the stairs. Before boot camp at the Coliseum, I did a set of 50 in 5's alternating placing hands on a 6" ball. During boot camp we did three sets of 25 pushups for a total of 75. After boot camp I finished up with a set of 25 with my feet on a large exercise ball. Today's pushup total is 200.

11/18 Sunday - Rest.

11/16 Friday - 1 set of 50 pushups at home with feet on the third step of the stairs. Before boot camp at the Coliseum, I did a set of 50 in 10's, raising a foot on 11-20 and 31-40. During boot camp, I did 50 regular pushups. After boot camp, I did a set of 50 in 5's alternating hands on a 6" ball, rested a few minutes and then did a last set of 50 pushups in 10's with hands in various positions. Today's pushup total is 250.

11/15 Thursday - 1 set of 50 pushups at home on my fists. At the Coliseum, I did my 2nd set of 50 in 5's, alternating hands on a 6" ball. Then did 50 declined situps, 50 body weight squats, 50 forward lunges, 20 curls with 25 lb. dumbells and sets of seated rows and tricep extensions. 3rd set of 50 pushups, raising a foot on 11-20 and 31-40, followed by more sets of 50 declined situps, body weight squats and reverse lunges, 20 curls with 25 lb. dumbells and sets of seated rows and tricep extensions. Last set of 50 pushups in 10's with hands in various positions. Today's pushup total is 200.

11/14 Wednesday - 1 set of 50 pushups at home with feet on the third step of the stairs. Before boot camp at the Coliseum, I did a set of 50, raising a foot on 11-20 and 31-40. During boot camp we did a few sets of pushups. My total during boot camp was 45. Finished up with a final set of 50 pushups. Today's pushup total is 200.

11/13 Tuesday - 1 set of 50 pushups at home with feet on the third step of the stairs. At the Coliseum, I did 10 1 minute circuits of 15 pushups and 15 crunches (for 150 of each in 10 minutes) and then 10 more 1 minute circuits of 10 pushups, 10 crunches and 10 squats (for 100 of each in 10 minutes). Total pushups for the day: 300.

11/12 Monday - 1 set of 50 pushups at home with feet on the third step of the stairs. Before boot camp at the Coliseum, I did a set of 50 in 5's alternating placing hands on a 6" ball. During boot camp we three sets of pushups. My total during boot camp was 60. Finished up with a final set of 40 in 8's with my hands in various positions. Today's pushup total is 200.

11/8 Thursday - 1 set of 50 pushups at home with feet on the third step of the stairs. At the Coliseum, I did 10 90 second circuits of 25 pushups and 25 crunches (for 250 of each in 15 minutes). This is the pace it would take to do 1000 pushups in 1 hour. Total pushups for the day: 300.

11/6 Tuesday - 1 set of 50 pushups at home with feet on the third step of the stairs. I voted this morning, so I didn't get into the Coliseum before work. Instead, I did 2 more sets of 50 regular pushups at home before my shower and another set of 50 later in the day. Today's pushup total is 200.

11/5 Monday - 1 set of 50 pushups at home with feet on the third step of the stairs. Before boot camp at the Coliseum, I did a set of 50, raising a foot on 11-20 and 31-40. During boot camp we did a few sets of pushups. My total during boot camp was 90. Finished up with a final set of 10 very slow pushups with my hands on dumbells. Today's pushup total is 200.

At the Coliseum, I did 10 1 minute circuits of 20 pushups and 15 crunches (for 200 pushups) followed by 10 more 1 minute circuits of 15 pushups and 15 crunches (for 150 pushups). I finished up with 50 side crunches followed by a 10 count while holding my feet up on each side. Today's pushup total is 400.

10/22 Monday - 1 set of 50 pushups at home with feet on the third step of the stairs. I was pretty late arriving at the Coliseum, so I skipped boot camp and did 1 minute circuits inistead. I started out with 4 circuits of 25 pushups and 10 crunches (for 100 pushups) and then did another 10 circuits of 15 pushups and 15 crunches (for 150 pushups and crunches). That gives me a total of 300 pushups for the day.

10/18 Thursday - 1 set of 50 pushups at home on my fists. At the Coliseum, I did 10 1 minute circuits of 15 pushups and 15 crunches (for 150 of each), followed by 5 more 1 minute circuits of 20 pushups and 15 crunches (for 100 pushups and 75 crunches). Total pushups for the day: 300.

10/17 Wednesday - 1 set of 50 pushups at home with feet on the third step of the stairs. Before boot camp I did a set of 50 pushups, raising a foot on 11-20 and 31-40. During boot camp, I did another 50 regular pushups. After boot camp, I had a photo shoot with Derek Middlebrook, www.dpmproductions.net. I have the opportunity to get some exposure in The Towne Laker magazine and they need some photos so Derek took a few pictures of me doing pushups that I will submit for publication. During the shoot, I did at least 30-40 pushups. Afterward I did another 30 regular pushups, just to make sure. I'm calling it 50, so today's pushup total is 200.

At the Coliseum, I did 5 1 minute circuits of 20 pushups and 20 crunches (for 100 pushups and crunches), and 10 more 1 minute circuits of 15 pushups and 15 crunches (for 150 more pushups and crunches) totalling 250 pushups and crunches in 15 minutes. During boot camp, we did 3 sets of pushups for 30 seconds and I got in another 75. After boot camp I finished up with a set of 25 in 5's with my hands in various positions. I used to consistently run 5Ks in under 19 minutes (of course, that was 23-ish years ago). This morning, my legs are trashed! 9/25 Tuesday - 1 set of 50 pushups on my fists at home. At the Coliseum, I did 23 1 minute circuits of 15 pushups and 15 crunches, with circuit #22 being 20 pushups and crunches. That totals 350 pushups and crunches in 23 minutes. After that I jogged the 2 mile loop - part of the 5k course from the office. Today's pushup total is 400.

9/21 Friday - Yesterday and still this morning, my shoulders and arms feel kind of twingy. I considered taking the day off, but EHHHH - this is going to be a record breaking week! I did my normal set of 50 pushups at home with feet on third step of the stairs. Before boot camp at the Coliseum, I did a set of 50 in 5's alternating hands on a 6" ball. During boot camp we did 75 pushups. After boot camp I finished up with 25 in 5's, with my hands in various positions. Today's pushup total is 200.

9/20 Thursday - 1 set of 50 pushups at home with feet on the third step of the stairs. As I mentioned on Tuesday, today is the day for a 1 minute circuit marathon. At the Coliseum, I did 30 1 minute circuits of 15 pushups and 15 crunches. I got between 15 - 20 seconds of rest after each set. This is a new personal record for me as that totals 450 pushups and crunches in 30 minutes. Add the 50 before I left the house and today's pushup total is 500. This is pretty cool!

9/19 Wednesday - 10 circuits of 20 pushups and 20 squats in 1 minute intervals. Today's pushups total is 200.

9/18 Tuesday - 1 set of 50 pushups at home with feet on the third step of the stairs. At the Coliseum, I was thinking about doing 350 pushups in 1 minute circuits, but got stupid and did 10 40 lb. dumbell curls with each arm first. Then I started doing circuits with 10 1 minute circuits of 20 pushups and 20 squats or crunches, alternating each circuit. Started getting kind of difficult, so I backed off and did another 5 1 minute circuits of 10 pushups and 20 crunches. In this manner I got in 250 pushups, 100 squats and 200 crunches in 15 minutes. Decided to stop there, but did sets of tricep extensions, seated rows, and some shoulder work before showering. Maybe on Thursday I'll do a 1 minute circuit marathon. We'll see how I feel. Today's pushup total is 300.

Then did 100 declined situps, sets of 50 squats and forward lunges, then sets of seated rows, curls and tricep extensions. 3rd set of 50 pushups, raising a foot on 11-20 and 31-40, followed by sets of 50 squats and reverse lunges, and 2 circuits of 10 crunches with feet in the air, 10 leg lifts, 10 crunches to left knee, 10 crunches to right knee and 10 leg scissors. Then sets of downward and upward lawnmower pulls and seated pulldowns and lat pulldowns. Last set of 50 pushups in 10's with hands in various positions. Finished up with 100 bicycles and 40 side crunches, each side. Today's pushup total is 200.

9/5 Wednesday - 1 set of 50 pushups at home with feet on the third step of the stairs. Before boot camp at the Coliseum, I did a set of 50 in 5's alternating hands on a 6" ball. 9/4 Tuesday - 1 set of 50 pushups at home with feet on the third step of the stairs. At the Coliseum, I did 35 1 minute circuits of 10 pushups, 10 squats and 10 crunches, for a total of 350 of each. For 3 sets of 5 circuits in there, I substituted 10 25 lb dumbell curls and 10 forward extended arm raises with 1 dumbell instead of the squats and crunches. Today's pushup total is 400.

8/31 Friday - 1 set of 50 pushups at home with feet on the third step of the stairs. During FitZone we did a total of 50 pushups with feet elevated. After yesterday's effort my shoulders and arms felt a little twingy by yesterday afternoon. With this in mind I decided to stop here. Today's pushup total is 100.

8/30 Thursday - 1 set of 50 pushups on my fists at home. At the Coliseum, I did 31 of my 1 minute circuits of 10 pushups, 10 squats and 10 crunches, with about 15 seconds of rest before the top of the minute. Every 5 minutes I substituted the squats and crunches with 10 20 lb. dumbell curls and 10 forward lifts with 1 of the dumbells. On several of the sets of squats I held one of the 20 lb. dumbells. Completing the 31 circuits (in 31 minutes) put me at 360 pushups. I just couldn't stop there, so I rested a few minutes and then did a final set of 40 in groups of 8, raising a foot on 9-16 and 25-32. Today's pushup total is 400. Yee HAW!

8/23 Thursday - Today is a great day! I started off with 50 pushups on my fists at home. At the Coliseum, I planned to do 15 of my 1 minute circuits of 10 pushups, 10 squats and 10 crunches, but it felt so good that I did 25 circuits. Today's pushup total is 300.

8/22 Wednesday - 1 set of 50 pushups at home with feet on the third step of the stairs. On the way to work, I filled up my truck and did a set of 50 pushups, raising a foot on 11-20 and 31-40. Then did 100 declined situps, sets of 50 squats and forward lunges, then sets of seated rows, curls and tricep extensions. 3rd set of 50 pushups, raising a foot on 11-20 and 31-40, followed by 30 leg lifts, 20 crunches and 50 bicycles. Then downward lawnmower pulls, seated pulldowns and lat pulldowns. Last set of 50 pushups in 10's with hands in various positions. Today's pushup total is 200.

8/20 Monday - 1 set of 50 pushups at home with feet on the third step of the stairs. During boot camp we did 60 pushups, leaving me with 90 to go for today's 200. However, since I was 50 short last week, I decided to do 140 to get back on track. So, I did 14 of my 1 minute pushup circuits starting at the top of the minute. Each circuit consists of 10 pushups, 10 body weight squats and 10 crunches with my feet straight up in the air. Today's pushup total is 250.

8/19 Sunday - Broke my own rule and did a set of 50 pushups today. 50 short for the week, with a weekly total of 1050. Running total for the year is 35,750.

8/17 Friday - 1 set of 50 pushups at home with feet on the third step of the stairs. Before FitZone at the Coliseum, I did another set of 50 pushups in 5's, alternating hands on a 6" ball. During FitZone, we did a total of 60 pushups. After FitZone, I did a set of 40 pushups in 8s, with hands in various positions. Today's pushup total is 200.

8/16 Thursday - 1 set of 50 pushups at home with feet on the third step of the stairs. At the Coliseum, I did something a little different, similar to how I finished up last Friday. This morning, with 150 pushups to go, I did 15 circuits starting at the top of the minute. Each circuit consisted of 10 pushups, 10 body weight squats and 10 crunches with my feet straight up in the air. I typically got 15 seconds to rest each time before the second hand got back up to 12. With no breaks, I got in my remaining 150 pushups in 15 miniutes, without too much difficulty. Today's pushup total is 200.

8/15 Wednesday - 1 set of 50 pushups at home with feet on the third step of the stairs. During boot camp, I did a total of 75 pushups, leaving me 75 to go. After boot camp, I did 40 pushups in eight groups of 5, alternating hands on a 6" ball. Then finished up with 35 in groups of 7, with my hands in various positions. Today's pushup total is 200.

8/8 Wednesday - 1 set of 50 pushups at home with feet on the third step of the stairs. Before FitZone, I did another set of 50 pushups in 5's, alternating hands on a 6" ball. During FitZone, we did a set of 10 bupees, and later 2 sets of 10 pushups, leaving me with 70 to go. After FitZone it did a set of 40 pushups in 8's, raising a foot during the 2nd and 4th set of 8. Finished up with a final set of 30 pushups in 6's, with my hands in various positions. Today's pushup total is 200.

7/10 Tuesday - 1 set of 50 pushups on my fists at home. At the Coliseum, I started with a set or 50 pushups in 5's, alternating placing hands on a 6" ball. Then I did 100 declined situps, followed by 50 bodyweight squats and reverse lunges. Next, did 12 40 lb. dumbell curls and 20 120 lb. tricep extensions. With 100 pushups to go, I tried something new that I heard from Joel in boot camp last week. I did 10 sets of pushups, starting with 1 and increasing by 1 each set, with a couple of seconds of rest between each set. So, I did 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 etc. to 10. That is a total of 55 pushups. Coming back down with 9, 8, 7, 6 etc. to 1 is another 45 pushups, to make 100. Try this. It's an easy way to do 100 pushups in just a few minutes. Today's pushup total is 200.

7/9 Monday - 1 set of 50 pushups at home with feet on the third step of the stairs. Before boot camp at the Coliseum, I did a second set of 50 pushups in 5's, alternating placing hands on a 6" ball. 6/21 Thursday - 1 set of 50 pushups on my fists at home. Gotta admit, these aren't my favorite, but I think I'll start doing them more often just because they're hard. At the Coliseum, I continued with a 2nd set of 50 pushups in 5's, alternating placing hands on a 6" ball. Then I did 100 declined situps, followed by sets of 50 body weight squats and forward lunges, and some curls, tricep extensions and seated rows. Then did a 3rd set of 50 pushups, lifting a foot on 11-20 and 31-40. 6/17 Sunday - Rest. Yesterday aftenoon I started feeling pretty achy all over and by evening I had some kind of intestinal bug complete with total body aches, chills and diarrhea. Slept fitfully, and didn't get out of bed until around 2:00 pm. This evening I feel much better, but not done yet. Will see if I feel like doing any pushups in the morning.

5/28 Monday - Today is Memorial Day. God bless all of those who sacrificed themselves while protecting our freedoms! I took today off from pushups. This is the second day I've taken off this year. I have 10 days remaining in my "take off" bank.

5/21 Monday - 1 set of 50 pushups inclined with feet on the third step at home. Durinig boot camp we did 3 sets of pushups for 30 seconds with feet on a half ball. I did 30 in each set for a total of 90. After boot camp, I did 2 more sets of 30, first set alternatine hands on a 6" bell in 5's and second set ,plain old regular pushups. Today's total is 200.

5/20 Sunday - Rest.

5/19 Saturday - Since I only did 55 pushups yesterday, today I did 5 sets of 50 instead of the usual 100 for a Saturday. This brings my total for the week to 1105. Rounding down, the running total for the year is 21,900.

5/18 Friday - Pamela and Emaline and I went to the Relay for Life event for Cherokee County this evening. I saved my pushups for this event. Met with the event leadership from the American Cancer Society when I got there and they let me have a few minutes with the microphone on stage, so I told the crowd what I'm doing and did 55 pushups, raising a leg on 21-30 and 41-50. I originally planned to do all of my pushups for today there, but I felt kind of awkward trying to get in the program, so I passed out a bunch of fliers instead.

I met hundreds of wonderful people who were all there for the same reason: either to celebrate the lives of loved ones who have lost their battles with cancer or those who have beaten it, or are currently fighting for their lives. What an inspiration these heroes are!

I look forward to the participation of all you wonderful people who promised to help me with this effort. Together we can raise the $1 million we seek!

5/2 Wednesday - Worked from home today. Didn't get my day started off with exercise. In the late afternoon I did a set of 75 regular pushups. Later in the evening I did another set of 50 inclined. Today's pushup total is 125.

Then did sets of 50 body weight squats and forward lunges, 10 - 45 lb dumbell curls, each arm, 10 - 110 lb. tricep extensions, 10 - 150 lb seated rows and 50 situps. 3rd set of 50 pushups, in sets of 5, alternating hands on a 6" ball. Then another circuit of 50 body weight squats and reverse lunges, curls, tricep extensions, pulldowns seated rows and situps. Finished up with final set of 50 pushups with hands in various positions. As usual, I started off this morning with 1 set of 50 pushups inclined with feet on the third step at home. During boot camp, we did another 86, so I threw in an extra 14 to make 100. Then I finished up with the last set of 50, raising left foot on 11-20 and right foot on 31-40. Today's pushup total is 200.

First set of pushups at the Coliseum with both hands on 6" balls, fully lowering to the floor for each. 2nd set straight, and last set with hands in various positions in 10's. Finished up with a 2 minute wall sit. Today's pushup total is 200.

3/28 Wednesday - All four sets of straight pushups at home today, as I worked from home. For the first set, I thought I'd do 70 because at 50 I still felt so good. Still felt good at 70 so I did 80 instead. Last few were slow and challenging. Rested and did 3 more sets of 50, 40 and 30 with rest between each set. Today's pushup total is 200.

3/27 Tuesday - 3 sets of regular pushups at home: 70, 70 and 60 for today's 200.

3/26 Monday - 1 set of 50 pushups inclined with feet on the third step at home. Did 50 during bootcamp, then 2 sets of 50 after. Today's pushup total is 200.

3/24 Saturday - A set of 70 and a set of 30 regular pushups. Weekly total is 1100. Running total for the year: 13,200.

3/23 Friday - 1 set of 50 pushups inclined with feet on the third step at home. Did a set of 50 before boot camp with one foot raised for 11-20 and the other foot raised for 31-40.  After boot camp, I did another set of 50 with one hand on a small ball, alternating hands every 5. Then did circuit of curls, tricep extensions and seated rows. Then the final set of 50 straight pushups to finish today's 200.

3/22 Thursday - 1 set of 50 pushups inclined with feet on the third step at home. At the Coliseum, I did a set of 70 straight pushups, bringing my total to 120, and then a circuit of declined situps, curls, tricep extensions, lat pulldowns, seated rows, more flat situps, bicycles and a set of 20 and 20 pushups with one hand on a 6" ball (20 each). Then did another circuit and finished up with 40 more straight pushups. Today's pushup total is 200.

3/21 Wednesday - 1 set of 50 pushups inclined with feet on the third step at home. Instead of bootcamp, did 3 circuits of 50 jumping jacks, 50 squats, 50 lunges, 50 declined situps, 50 light weight seated rows and lat pulldowns, 100 bicycles and then 50 pushups. Today's pushup total is 200.

3/20 Tuesday - 3 sets of straight pushups at home:70, 70 and 60 for today's 200.

3/19 Monday - 1 set of 50 pushups inclined with feet on the third step at home. After bootcamp, I did 3 sets of 50 with sets of curls, tricep extensions, lat pulldowns situps, leg lifts and lawnmower pulldowns in between. Today's pushup total is 200.

3/18 Sunday - Rest.

3/17 Saturday - 0 pushups since I did them all by Friday! Running total for the year: 12,100

3/16 Friday - 1 set of 50 pushups inclined with feet on the third step at home. After boot camp at the Coliseum, I did another set of 50 to finish today's 100. That makes 1100 for the week with the 400 from yesterday.

3/15 Thursday - 2 sets of 70 and 1 set of 60 straight pushups at home for 200. Later, I did 4 more sets of 50 just because I can and to get a bit ahead of the game. I'm thinking one of these days, I going to do all 1100 for the week on Monday and take the rest of the week off. Today's pushup total is 400.

3/14 Wednesday - 1 set of 50 pushups inclined with feet on the third step at home. During bootcamp at the Coliseum we did 80 pushups. Afterword, I did a straight set of 50 and then a final set of 20. Today's pushup total is 200.

3/12 Monday - 1 set of 50 pushups inclined with feet on the third step at home. At the Coliseum, I did a set of 50 straight pushups during bootcamp and another 30 as part of bootcamp. Afterwards, I did a set of 40, followed by sets of curls, tricep extensions, lat pulldowns and lawnmower pulldowns. Finished up with last set of 30 pushups in 6s with hands in various positions. Today's pushup total is 200.

Then did a circuit of lat pulldowns, seated rows, leg presses, leg curls, curls with 35 lb dumbells, 20 tricep extensions at 100 and 50 bicycles. Third set of 50 straight pushups. Repeated circuit. Last set of 50 pushups in 10s with hands in various positions. Today's pushup total is 200.

3/7 Wednesday - 4 sets of pushups at home. First set of 50 inclined with feet on the third step. Then did a circuit of 50 jumping jacks, 50 squats, 50 lunges, 50 situps, 50 leg lifts, 50 bicycles, 2nd set 50 pushups, raising one foot on 11-20 and 31-40. Another circuit of 50 jumping jacks, 50 squats, 50 lunges, 50 situps, 50 leg lifts, 50 bicycles, then third set of 70 straight pushups. Took a break for a few minutes and then did my last set of 30 to complete today's 200.

Today's pushup total is 200.

Between these sets, I did 100 declined situps, and sets of seated pulldowns, leg presses, bent over lat pulls and hanging situps. Today's pushup total is 200.

2/29 Wednesday - 1 set of 50 pushups inclined with feet on the third step at home. After boot camp, 3 more sets of 50 pushups mixed, interspersed with sets of seated rows, curls, tricep extensions, leg lifts and bicycles to finish today's 200.

2/28 Tuesday - 1 set of 50 pushups inclined with feet on the third step at home. At the coliseum I did 3 sets of 50, first with feet elevated, second straight and last set placing my hands in various positions for 10 each. Between sets, did circuits of lat pulldowns, leg presses, lunges and 100 declined situps. Today's pushup total is 200.

2/23 Thursday - 50 inclined pushups at home, with feet on the 3rd stair step. At the Coliseum, I did 3 sets of 50, with last set in 10s with hands in various positions. Between these sets, I did 100 declined situps, and sets of seated pulldowns, leg presses, bent over lat pulls and hanging situps. Then did 15 minutes on the elliptical machine for 280 calories burned. Today's pushup total is 200.

2/22 Wednesday - 50 pushups at home, raising one foot on 11-20 and 31-40. Great boot camp - lots of constant aerobic movement. Afterwards, 3 more sets of 50 pushups mixed, interspersed with sets of seated rows, curls, tricep extensions, leg lifts and bicycles to finish today's 200.

2/21 Tuesday - 1 set of 50 pushups inclined with feet on the third step at home. At the Coliseum, I did 3 circuits of 50 jumping jacks, 50 squats, 50 lunges, 50 leg lifts, 50 bicycles and 50 pushups. Finished up with 15 minutes on the elliptical machine for 240 calories burned. Today's pushup total is 200.

2/20 Monday - 2 sets of 50 pushups at home. 50 pushups during boot camp at the Coliseum. After boot camp, 1 more set of 50 - in 10s with hands in various positions to finish today's 200. Also did sets of seated rows and lat pulldowns.

2/18 Saturday - 1 set of 50 pushups inclined with feet on the third step. Second set of 40 straight. The total for week 7 is 1100. Running total for the year: 7700

2/17 Friday - 50 inclined pushups at home, with feet on the 3rd stair step. Interspersed throughout boot camp, we did three sets of pushups in various manners, totaling 110. After boot camp, I did another set of 50 and sets of seated rows, curls, tricep extensions, leg lifts and bicycles. Today's pushup total is 210.

2/16 Thursday - 1 set of 50 pushups at home, raising one foot on 11-20 and 31-40. Then, at the Coliseum, I did 50 double-pushup burpees in 2 sets of 15 and 2 sets of 10 for another 100 pushups. Between these sets, I did 100 declined situps, and sets of seated rows, butterflies and bicycles. Then did a final set of 50 pushups and 10 minutes on the elliptical machine for 204 calories burned. Today's pushup total is 200.

2/15 Wednesday - 50 inclined pushups at home, with feet on the 2nd stair step and raising one foot on 11-20 and 31-40. 50 more pushups during boot camp at the Coliseum. Then 2 more sets of 50: first set with feet on overturned half ball, 2nd set just straight pushups, interspersed with sets of seated rows, curls, tricep extensions, leg lifts and bicycles to finish today's 200.

2/14 Tuesday - 4 sets of 50 pushups at home, interspersed with jumping jacks, squats, lunges, leg lifts, and bicycles. Today's pushup total is 200.

2/13 Monday - 50 pushups at home. Worked in 2 sets of 25 pushups during boot camp at the Coliseum for another 50. After boot camp, 2 more sets of 50: first set raising one foot on 11-20 and 31-40, 2nd set just straight pushups. Interspersed with sets of seated rows, curls, tricep extensions and lat pulldowns to finish today's 200.

2/11 Saturday - 2 sets of 50 pushups this morning for today's 100, first set inclined with feet on the third step. Second set straight. The total for week 6 is 1100. Running total for the year: 6600

2/10 Friday - 4 sets of 50 pushups at home, interspersed with jumping jacks, squats, lunges, leg lifts, and bicycles. Today's pushup total is 200.

2/9 Thursday - 2 sets of 50 pushups at home. Then, at the Coliseum, I did another set of 50 with hands on step-aerobics bases, lowering between them for each rep. Did 100 declined situps, and sets of seated rows, curls, tricep extensions, lat pulldowns and reverse lat pulldowns. Final set of 50 pushups and another circuit of seated rows, curls, tricep extensions, lat pulldowns and reverse lat pulldowns. 60 seconds of wall sit and 10 minutes on the elliptical machine for 184 calories burned. Today's pushup total is 200.

2/8 Wednesday - 50 inclined pushups at home, with feet on the 3rd stair step. After boot camp at the Coliseum, 3 more sets of 50: first set raising one foot on 11-20 and 31-40, 2nd set just straight pushups, 3rd set in 10s with hands in various positions. Interspersed with sets of seated rows, curls and butterflies and lat pulldowns to finish today's 200.

2/7 Tuesday - 50 inclined pushups at home, with feet on the second stair step. At the Coliseum, 3 more sets of 50, interspersed with sets of seated rows, curls and butterflies and lat pulldowns to finish today's 200.

2/6 Monday - 50 pushups at home. A lot of pushups during boot camp, totaling 120. After boot camp I did a final set of 30 to finish today's 200.

Then a third set of 50 pushups, curls, seated rows and tricep extensions. Finally, a 4th set of 50 pushups with my hands in various different places on the floor in sets of 10. Finished up with a 60 second wall sit. Today's pushup total is 200.

2/2 Thursday - 50 pushups at home. Then I did 3 more sets of 50, interspersed with squats, lunges, leg lifts, curls, tricep extensions and bicycles. Today's pushup total is 200.

2/1 Wednesday - 50 pushups at home. Then I did 5 circuits of 30 jumping jacks, lunges, squats, lifts, bicycles, pushups and curls/rows/tricep extensions. Today's pushup total is 200.

1/31 Tuesday - 50 pushups at home. At the Coliseum, I did another set of 50, lifting one leg for 11-20 and the other leg for 31-40. Then sets of seated rows, curls and butterflies. Then did a set of 30 with my feet elevated on a big exercise ball. Rested for a minute and did 20 more regular pushups. Then some leg work on the machines, 90 second wall sit, and a final set of 50 pushups with my hands in various different places on the floor in sets of 10 to finish today's 200.

1/30 Monday - 50 pushups at home. At one point during a rest moment in boot camp, I squeezed in a set of 50. Later in boot camp we did some pushups for 30 seconds (twice), so I was able to get in another 50. That brings the total to 150 pushups. After boot camp I did 2 more sets of 25 with some seated rows and curls between them to finish today's 200.

1/27 Friday - 50 pushups at home. Did 36 in boot camp. Afterwards, I did 14 with one hand on a medicine ball and the other on the floor (7 with each hand) to make 50. Then did 2 more sets of 50 with curls/rows/tricep extensions mingled in to finish today's 200.

1/26 Thursday - 50 pushups at home. Then I did 5 circuits of 30 jumping jacks, lunges, squats, lifts, bicycles, pushups and curls/rows/tricep extensions. Today's pushup total is 200.

1/25 Wednesday - 50 pushups at home. After boot camp, I did 50 pushups, lifting one leg for 11-20 and 31-40, 1 set of 10 seated rows at 170 lbs, another set of 50 pushups, curls, and the last set of 50 pushups to finish today's 200.

1/24 Tuesday - 50 pushups at home. When I got to the Coliseum, I did 3 circuits of 30 jumping jacks, lunges, squats and leg lifts, and 50 pushups and bicycles. Threw in a set of seated rows for good measure. Today's pushup total is 200.

1/23 Monday - 50 pushups at home. Didn't leave early enough to do boot camp. Instead, when I got to work I did 50 double burpees in 2 sets of 15 and 2 sets of 10, interspersed with sets of seated rows, curls and tricep extensions. That brings the total to 150 pushups. Next, did a 100 declined situps, 30 leg lifts, 50 bicycles and then 50 side crunches on each side.  Finished up with a set of 50 more pushups, lifting one leg for 11-20 and 31-40 to finish today's 200.

1/22 Sunday - Rest.

1/21 Saturday - 2 sets of 50 pushups this morning for today's 100. First set with feet elevated, second set lifting one leg for 11-20, and the other leg for 31-40. The total for week 3 is 1100. Running total for the year: 3300

1/20 Friday - 50 pushups at home. 20 pushups during a grueling boot camp with lots of work on the core, arms and shoulders. After boot camp I did a set of 50 pushups with feel elevated. Then did another set of 50, lifting one leg for 11-20, and the other leg for 31-40. Finished up with the last set of 30. Between the pushup sets, I interspersed sets of seated rows and tricep extensions. Total pushups for the day: 200.

1/19 Thursday - 50 pushups at home. No boot camp. Did 50 burpees in 2 sets of 15 and 3 sets of 10 for day 50 of the challenge. The burpee challenge is completed! For each of the 50 burpees today I did double pushups, bringing the total to 150. Interspersed sets of seated rows, curls and tricep extensions. Then did a set of 50 pushups, lifting one leg for 11-20, and the other leg for 31-40. Total pushups for the day: 200.

1/18 Wednesday - 50 pushups at home. 40 pushups during boot camp. After boot camp I did a set of 15 burpees, with the first 10 double pushups to add to the 40 we did in boot camp to make 50.  Then did sets of 14, 10 and 10 to complete a total of 49 for day 49 of the challenge. For the last burpee I did a double pushup to make it an even 50 pushups. That makes 150 so far. Then, did a final set of 50 more pushups to finish today's 200. Throughout the burpees and pushup sets, I interspersed sets of seated rows, curls and tricep extensions.

1/17 Tuesday - 50 pushups at home. No boot camp today. Did 48 burpees in 2 sets of 14 and 3 sets of 10 for day 48 of the challenge. Interspersed sets of seated rows, curls and tricep extensions. For the last 2 I did double pushups to make it an even 50 pushups. Then did a set of 50 inclined pushups, some core work of situps, leg lifts and bicycles and another set of 50 pushups. Total pushups for the day: 200.

1/16 Monday - 50 pushups at home. At the Coliseum I did one set of 14 burpees before boot camp. No pushups during boot camp. After boot camp I did 33 more burpees to complete a total of 47 for day 47 of the challenge. For the last 3 burpees I did double pushups to make it an even 50 pushups. That makes 100 so far. Next, did a set of 50 more pushups, lifting one leg for 11-20 and 31-40. Finished up with sets of 30 and 20 to finish today's 200.

1/13 Friday - 50 inclined pushups at home with my feet on the second stair. At the Coliseum, we had a pretty tough boot camp. Then I did 46 burpees for day 46 of the challenge. Interspersed sets of seated rows, curls and tricep extensions. For the last 4 burpees I did double pushups to make it an even 50 pushups. Then finished up with sets of 50, 30 and 20 regular pushups. Total pushups for the day: 200.

1/12 Thursday - 50 inclined pushups at home with my feet on the second stair. At the Coliseum, I did 45 burpees in sets of 15 and 10 for day 45 of the challenge. Interspersed sets of seated rows, curls and tricep extensions. For the last 5 burpees I did double pushups to make it an even 50 pushups. Then finished up with two sets of 50 regular pushups. Total pushups for the day: 200.

1/11 Wednesday - 50 pushups at home. Didn't do boot camp today. At the Coliseum, I did 44 burpees in sets of 14 and 10 for day 44 of the challenge. Interspersed sets of seated rows, curls and tricep extensions. For the last 6 burpees I did double pushups to make it an even 50 pushups. Then finished up with a set of 50 regular pushups, and sets of 30 and 20 inclined pushups. Total pushups for the day: 200.

1/10 Tuesday - 50 pushups at home. No boot camp today. Did 43 burpees in sets of 10 for day 43 of the challenge. Interspersed sets of seated rows, curls and tricep extensions. For the last 7 I did double pushups to make it an even 50 pushups. Then finished up with a set of 50 inclined pushups, some core work of leg lifts and bicycles and sets of 30 and 20 pushups. Total pushups for the day: 200.

1/9 Monday - 50 pushups at home. In boot camp we did 4 sets of 20 with hands on dumbbells interspersed throughout the other boot camp exercises. After boot camp I did 42 burpees for day 42 of the challenge. That makes 172 so far. Finished up with another 28 pushups with feet elevated to finish today's 200.

1/8 Sunday - Rest.

1/7 Saturday - 2 sets of 50 pushups this morning for today's 100. The total for week 1 is 1100. The running total for the year is 1100. We're on track!

1/6 Friday - Did 50 at home. In boot camp, didn't do any pushups or burpees, but got some excellent core work in. After boot camp, I did 41 burpees for day 41 of the challenge. Then did another 110 pushups in sets of 40, 40 and 30 to finish today's 200.

1/5 Thursday - Did 50 at home. At the Coliseum, I did 79 burpees to cover days 39 and 40 of the burpee challenge. Then I did another 71 pushups in 2 sets to finish up today's 200. Interspersed throughout the burpee and pushup sets, I did sets of arm and shoulder exercises like rows, lat pulls, tricep extensions, curls, etc.

1/4 Wednesday - 50 at home. During bootcamp at work, did another 80 pushups for total of 130. After bootcamp, did burpees for days 37 and 38. Brings total for day to 205 (but I'll call it 200 to keep the math easy).

1/3 Tuesday -  50 at home. At work, did 71 burpees to cover days 35 and 36. Then did 2 sets of 40 pushups to make a total of 201 for the day, interspersed with curls, rows, situps and tricep extensions.

1/2 Monday - Today is my company's holiday observance of New Years Day and the official start of my pushup year. No burpees today since I'm not at the office, but I did my 200 pushups this morning at home. First set declined, with my feet on the 2nd step of the stairs, 2nd set in normal position, only I raised my right foot for 11-20 and my left foot for 31-40. 3rd set just straight pushups, and last set, alternating 10's of hands in close and wide apart.

1/1/2012 Sunday - HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!!! Isn't ironic that I've been doing all these thousands of pushups since June/July in preparation for doing 1100 pushups each week in 2012. Now, on the first day of 2012, I didn't do any pushups! That's OK though, since Sunday is my day of rest each week. I'll start my pushups for the week in the morning.

12/31 Saturday - 2 sets of 50 pushups this morning for today's 100. Total for the week is 1100. Except for the 2 separate weeks when I only did 500, I've done between 1000-1100 pushups every week since I started keeping track of my pushups in July. I am ready for this.

12/30 Friday - 50 at home. At work, no burpees during boot camp, but did another 50 pushups. After boot camp did 100 burpees to cover days 32, 33 and 34, with one extra.

12/29 Thursday - Working from home today, so 4 sets of 50 pushups.

12/28 Wednesday - 50 at home. At the Coliseum, several of us did boot camp with no burpee sets. Afterwards, I did 3 sets of 15 and 1 set of 16 for a total 61 burpees to cover days 30 and 31 of the burpee challenge. After that, I did a set of 50 pushups and a set of 39 (inclined) to finish today's 200. I often do a set of pushups with my feet elevated to keep things interesting.

12/27 Tuesday - 50 at home. At work, did days 26, 27, 28 and 29 of burpees for a total of 110. Then did a set of 50 pushups to finish today's 210. (I miscounted, thinking the burpees totaled 100, so I accidentally did 10 extra).

12/26 Monday - starting out a new week. Holiday from work, but did my 200 pushups at home.

12/25 Sunday - Day off. Merry Christmas!

12/24 did 100 pushups on Saturday. Total pushups for this week is 1100.

12/23/2011  Friday - 1 set of 50 pushups before leaving the house for work. During boot camp and after, I completed days 23, 24 and 25 for a total of 72 burpees. Then in 2 sets, did 78 pushups to total 200 for the day.

12/22/2011  Thursday - 1 set of 50 pushups before leaving the house for work. Then at the gym I did days 20, 21 and 22 for a total of 63 burpees. That gives me 113 pushups total, so far. Sets of 50 and 37 pushups makes my total for today 200.

12/21/2011 Wednesday - This morning I did a set of 50 pushups before leaving the house for work. In Boot Camp, we did a 12 Days of Christmas routine where we did 4 burpees for day 4 in the song, totaling 36 by the time you get to day 12 in the song. Then I did Days 17, 18 and 19 of the burpee challenge for a total of 54 burpees. Total pushups at this point is 140, so I did another 60 (sets of 40 and 20) to wrap up today's 200.

12/20/2012 Tuesday - Peer pressure is a terrible thing! This morning I did a set of 50 pushups before leaving the house for work. Then I was coerced by some of my bootcamp peers into making my burpees official, signing my name on the board tn the Coliseum and getting started catching up all the burpees I have missed by not doing them at the office. To catch up through day 16 requires a total of 136 burpees (1 + 2 + 3 + 4, etc.). The 40 I did yesterday in the Coliseum count, so I did 96 burpees today, bringing me up to Day 16 of the challenge. In addition to the burpees, I did another set of 54 pushups to finish up my 200 pushups for the day. I also did several sets of lat pulls, 100 situps, 100 bicycles, a couple sets of bench press with 205, and 50 side crunches on each side.

12/19/2012 Monday - This morning I did a set of 50 pushups before leaving the house for work. At work, we did 40 burpees during the course of bootcamp, so that completed my 19 burpees for the day and then some. Then I did the remaining 110 pushups for today's 200.

The Burpee Challenge
My company, Jackson Healthcare, has a full gym on the first floor (The Coliseum) and usually has some sort of ongoing exercise program for the employees. The burpee challenge began on December 1 with all participants doing 1 burpee. A burpee starts from a standing position. Squat to put your hands on the floor in front of your feet. Then kick both legs back so that you are in pushup position. Then do 1 pushup. Then "jump" your feet back up next to your hands. Finally, jump straight up in the air, reaching for the sky. That complete cycle is 1 burpee. On 12/2 everyone did 2 burpees, with the plan being to add 1 burpee each day through 1/20/2012. On January 20 we do 50 burpees. The only requirement is that you do all burpees in the Coliseum at work for them to officially count.

So, on December 1, I decided  to do the program, but not sign up - just do them on my own at home or at the office for fun. The pushup part of each burpee counts (of course) as one pushup.
